Charleston Home Builders Association Partners To Give $6,000 Local Scholarship

Charleston, SC—On April 25, 2017, Charleston Home Builders Association (CHBA), in collaboration with Southeastern Family Homes, will award one local student from the Charleston County School of the Arts a $6,000 scholarship during the 1st annual Architectural Illustration Student Competition.  Over 40 Junior and Senior art students will have the opportunity to showcase their high-quality work through architectural renderings of one model floor plan, the Waterview, for an upcoming residential project—Whitney Lake on Johns Island.

The event will take place at Crowne Plaza Charleston Airport—Conv Ctr during the CHBA’s quarterly Membership Meeting.  “In the past, Membership Meetings have hosted representatives from Local or State Legislation.  North Charleston Mayor Summey recently spoke at our first General Membership Meeting of the year a few days ago.  But this meeting will focus on the students, where our future is in the building industry and any industry for that matter.  We want to invest in them now,” states Tori Stein, President of the CHBA.  All 40+ submissions will be on display at the event.

Once submissions close on January 31, 2017, the CHBA Scholarship Program will choose three finalists from the 40+ works, and a judging panel will decide 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.  Winners will be selected based on quality of work and value it could add to the marketability of the home.  1st place will receive a $6,000  scholarship, honorary plaque, opportunity to complete five more renderings, use of their winning rendering in all marketing materials for the Whitney homes, and Summer internship with CHBA builder member Contract Exteriors.  2nd and 3rd place will both receive a $250 scholarship, honorary plaque and Summer internships with CHBA builder members Saltwater Homes and CK Contracting, respectively.

The art students will take the Waterview model home and draw in additions such as shrubbery, lighting, color and other details to allow for a potential home buyer to see themselves as if they are already living in the home.  Each student is able to choose from a list of Benjamin Moore colors, all of which will be used in the construction of the homes at Whitney Lakes.  There is no requirement on art medium, as it will be left to the student and teacher’s discretion.

Sponsors such as Benjamin Moore Paint, along with several other local and private donations, will help make one of these Charleston student’s future a reality.
